In key ways, planning a podcast episode and writing a news article aren’t so different. Both require a motivating question. Both need brisk pacing and an overall narrative arc. Both are, at the core, stories. At the University of California, Irvine, I managed the UCI Podcast, growing my storytelling acumen in new ways. In each episode, I interviewed a UCI professor or other expert about a newsy topic related to their research or work. Many episodes were about the COVID-19 pandemic, while others addressed a wide range of subjects, from environmental law to economics to water policy.
Here are a few of my favorite episodes:
“UCI Podcast: The legal fallout of the Orange County oil spill” (Oct. 26, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: The technologies that could solve California’s droughts” (Sept. 14, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: Uncovering the cause of the soil lead crisis in Santa Ana” (July 29, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: The economics of why work from home favors the suburbs” (June 17, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: How drought and climate change threaten California’s water” (March 30, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: COVID-19 long haulers and lasting neurological damage” (Feb. 25, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: Solving climate change with clean hydrogen fuel” (Jan. 27, 2021)
“UCI Podcast: Undoing Trump’s environmental regulation rollbacks” (Dec. 16, 2020)
“UCI Podcast: COVID-19’s long-term economic and health impacts” (Dec. 9, 2020)
